Jack (Roof Jack/Pipe Boot)
Definition: A roof jack, also known as a pipe boot, is a preformed flashing used to seal the area around roof penetrations, such as plumbing vents, exhaust pipes, or other cylindrical objects that pass through the roof. The roof jack is designed to create a watertight seal, preventing water from leaking into the roof structure where the pipe or vent exits.
The primary function of a roof jack is to prevent water from seeping into the roof structure where pipes, vents, or other penetrations occur. The roof jack ensures that the roof remains watertight, protecting the interior of the building from leaks.
Roof Jack Components:
- Base Flange: The flat part of the roof jack that lies flush against the roof surface, usually made of metal, rubber, or a combination of materials. The base flange is typically secured under the roofing material (like shingles) to direct water away from the penetration.
- Flexible Collar: The collar, or boot, is the cylindrical part that wraps around the pipe or vent. It is often made of flexible rubber or silicone to accommodate various pipe sizes and ensure a snug fit, even as the roof expands and contracts with temperature changes.
- Cap: Some roof jacks include a cap or top component that fits over the pipe or vent, providing additional protection against rain and debris.
Types of pipe boot:
- Metal Roof Jack: Typically made of galvanized steel or aluminum, these are used with metal roofing systems. They are durable and often used in commercial or industrial applications.
- Rubber Pipe Boot: Common in residential roofing, rubber pipe boots are flexible and easy to install, making them a popular choice for sealing around plumbing vents and exhaust pipes.
- High-Temperature Roof Jack: Made from specialized materials like silicone, these are used in areas where high temperatures are expected, such as around exhaust pipes from furnaces or stoves.
