Metal Roof installation Process

The metal roofing installer process is a complicated process that requires the use of specialized tools and equipment. It also involves a lot of time, which can be frustrating for homeowners looking to install their new roofs as quickly as possible.

However, there's no reason why you should have to wait around for your roof to be installed. All you need is basic knowledge about how to do so, and then you can start working on your home improvement project.

Take note: You must get an experienced metal roofing contractor who knows what they're doing. You don't want to do this yourself unless you're very confident about what you're doing.

The 8-step metal roofing installer process by Professional Metal Roofing

About-Installation-images-02

At Professional Metal Roofing, we follow a high-quality 8-step metal roofing installer process. Our expert team of metal roofing installers follows Canadian standards when installing metal roofing, using only the best materials from Germany. You can count on us for your metal roofing installation!

The following is a breakdown of our 8-step metal roofing installer process:

Step 1: Roof inspection

A roof inspection is a first and most important step in any roofing project. Our inspector will look at your home to determine if it has a leaky or damaged roof. If there are no leaks or damage, then you can proceed with the next steps of the roofing process.

In addition, prep work will be done, which includes cleaning up the area around the house, and removing weeds, grass, leaves, etc. if needed

Step 2: Material preparation

The next step in the metal roofing installer process is to prepare the material for an installation. This includes cleaning and prepping the surface of the substrate and preparing any fasteners or other hardware that will be installed with the roofing system.

Fastener placement: Our qualified metal roofing installer must determine where each fastener should go on the roof. Roofing systems typically use a combination of nails, screws, and staples. Each type of fastener requires different tools and techniques. For example, roofing materials may require special types of screws or bolts.

Step 3: Lumber Strapping

The strapping is used to secure the plywood subfloor and the top of the trusses. It also helps to keep the roof from moving or sliding off the building during high winds. This step takes about 30 minutes(not true). It also creates the ventilation gap between metal and old shingles layers.

Roof truss installation: Once all the lumber has been secured, it's time for the roof trusses to be installed. Each truss consists of two pieces of wood joined together with a metal connector. The trusses should be placed so as not to interfere with any windows or doors. They can be installed either horizontally or vertically. Horizontal trusses are more common than vertical ones because they allow for larger spans. However, vertical trusses provide better support for heavier roofs.( we dont do it)

Sheathing: The next step in the metal roofing installer process is to cover the entire roof with plywood. Plywood is a good choice for covering roofs because it provides excellent insulation and protection against moisture. It also allows air to circulate freely through the attic space. ( we only install new plywood when the old one is in poor condition)

Step 4: Accessories installation

The accessories are installed on the roof. The accessories include gutters, downspouts, and flashing. Gutters are placed along the roof's edge to catch the water that runs off the roof. Downspouts are connected to the gutter and drain into a storm sewer or other drainage system. Flashing is used to seal joints between the roof covering material and the structure. It is also used to prevent leaks at the base of the chimney.

  • Gutters: Guttering is usually made out of aluminum or copper. Aluminum is lighter weight and easier to work with. Copper is stronger but heavier. Both metals have their advantages and disadvantages.
  • Flashing: Flashing protects the area around the chimney and the roof deck. It prevents water from leaking into these areas.
  • Chimney flashing: Chimneys are often located near the center of a house. Because of this, there is a risk that water will leak into the attic space if the flashing isn't properly installed. To prevent this from happening, the flashing must be installed correctly (remove it).
  • Chimney cap: A chimney cap is a piece of metal that covers the opening of the chimney. It keeps debris from falling into the flue and causing problems.(remove it)
  • Attic ventilation: Attic ventilation is necessary to ensure that heat doesn't build up inside the attic  and doesn’t cause condensation when warm air meets cold
Step 5: Metal panels installation

The metal panels are installed on the top of the new roof. This is done by installing a series of metal clips along the roof's perimeter, then attaching each panel to these clips by attaching panels to each other and to the lumber strapping with special roofing screws with EPDM washer that seals the gap between the screws and the roofing panels . Once the panels have been attached, they are covered in felt paper, and shingles are applied over them.(no sense, remove it)

Step 6: Finishing accessories installation

The finishing accessories are installed on the top of the roof. The most common ones are ridge caps and soffits.(it is not) wall flashings and gable flasings

  • Ridge cap: A ridge cap is a triangular round-shaped metal panel that goes over the roof's peak. It's usually made of aluminum made of the same material and serves two purposes. First, it protects the shingle from wind uplift forces covers the gaps between roofing panels. Second, it provides an aesthetic look to the roof.
  • Soffit: A soffit is a small extension of the eaves that extends beyond the fascia board. It's typically wood, but some manufacturers offer soffits made of fiberglass. They serve the same purpose as the ridge cap - protecting the shingle from wind forces and providing an aesthetically pleasing look. Wall flashing connects the roofing panel with walls and gable flashing protects the panels from the wind uplift forces

Other roofing accessories include:

  • Vents: Vents are openings that allow air to flow through the roof. There are different vents, including ridge vents, hip vents, valley vents, etc.
  • Chimney: A chimney is a vertical structure that allows smoke to escape from the fireplace.
  • Skylight: A skylight is a light-permitting structure or window that forms all or a portion of a building's roof space for daylighting and ventilation. Skylights are typically made of transparent or translucent glass.
  • Sun Tubes: Sun Tubes can dramatically change a dark or windowless room into a space filled with natural light (remove it).
Step 7: Final inspection

Inspecting your new roof includes checking for leaks and ensuring that all flashings have been installed correctly. If you have a leak, we must get this fixed as soon as possible so that water damage doesn't occur.

Step 8: Cleaning the job site

The last step of a new roof is to clean up all debris and materials. This includes removing any nails, screws, or other fasteners used during construction. It also includes cleaning out gutters, downspouts, and drains.(remove it as we cant clean it) Finally, it means sweeping up loose shingle material and disposing it in an approved manner.

Our metal roofing installers often use a pressure washer to remove roof debris. They may also use a high-pressure hose to clear gutters and drains.( we don’t do it)
