Kickout Flashing

Kickout Flashing

Definition:

Kickout flashing (diverter flashing) is a specialized type of flashing installed where a roof meets a vertical wall, specifically at the bottom edge of the roof where it intersects with the wall. Its primary purpose is to direct water away from the wall and into the gutter, preventing water from running down the side of the building and causing potential water damage.

Kickout Flashing Functions:

  • Water Diversion: this flashing is designed to “kick out” or redirect water that runs down the roof, ensuring that it flows into the gutter rather than along the wall. This is crucial for protecting the siding, windows, doors, and foundation from water intrusion.
  • Preventing Rot and Mold: By directing water away from the wall, diverter flashing helps prevent the moisture buildup that can lead to wood rot, mold growth, and other structural issues. This is particularly important in areas where the roof terminates near walls, windows, or doors, which are vulnerable to water damage.

Components:

  • Angled Design: The key feature of water diverter is its distinctive angled design, which protrudes from the wall and roof intersection, creating a “kick” that pushes water outward into the gutter.
  • Material: Kickout flashing is typically made from durable, weather-resistant materials such as galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, or a high-quality plastic composite. These materials are chosen for their ability to withstand exposure to water, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations.

Applications:

  • Roof-Wall Intersections: Kickout flashing is essential wherever a roof meets a vertical wall, particularly in areas where the roof slopes downward toward the wall. Common applications include where roofs intersect with chimneys, dormers, or second-story walls.
  • Retrofit and New Construction: Diverter flashing can be installed during new construction or added as a retrofit to existing roofs where water damage has been an issue. In retrofits, care must be taken to ensure that the flashing integrates seamlessly with existing roofing and siding materials.
