Flashing Tape

flashing tape

Definition: Flashing tape is a waterproof, self-adhesive material applied to roof surfaces to cover joints, seams, and penetrations in order to provide extra barrier against water intrusion. It is widely used to reinforce flashing around roof edges, chimneys, vents, and skylights, and to fix overlaps in roofing underlayment.

Flashing Tape Key Features

  • Sealing: Flashing tape dries up the leaks, which can occur at areas on the roof where the air flow can’t pass through.
  • Flexible Adhesive Backing: The self-adhesive quality of the tape allows it to be easily installed without the use of additional fasteners or silicone.
  • Flashing tape is made of butyl, asphalt, or rubberized asphalt that is UV resistant, temperature resistant, and water resistant.
  • Capacity: Flexibility makes it ideal for sealing irregular shapes and complex contoured spaces, including roof penetrations.

Applications

  • Roof Penetrations: Generally, flashing tape is placed over vents, chimneys and skylights to seal off and keep water out.
  • Subfloor Overlays: Replacing roof overlayment overlaps keeps the waterproof envelope intact.
  • Eaves and Valleys: Flashing tape provides extra protection to eaves and valleys that are particularly vulnerable to high flow.
  • Frames For Windows and Doors: Aside from roofing, this tape is used in the construction industry to plug windows and doors from water and air leaks.
