Gutter Apron

Definition: A gutter apron is a piece of metal flashing applied to the roof’s edge to channel rainwater away from the roof into the eavestrough system. Installed under the shingle and above the back edge of the gutter, it keeps water away from the roof deck and fascia by keeping it from passing behind the gutters.
Purpose and Functionality:
- Water Redirection: The most basic use for this detail is to direct rain and melted snow directly into the gutters so that the water does not drip behind the gutter or on the fascia board.
- Guard Against Water Damage: By diverting water into the gutters, the gutter apron keeps water from seeping under the shingles and causing rot, mold, and destruction of the roof deck and fascia.
- Increased Gutter Efficiency: components increase the effectiveness of the gutter system as they are designed to maintain a smooth running water, preventing overflow or backflow during heavy rainfall.
Materials:
- Aluminum: one of the most lightweight, rust resistant and inexpensive materials for gutter aprons.
- Galvanized Steel: Strong and durable, galvanized steel offers excellent corrosion resistance but may need regular maintenance to avoid rust.
- Copper: a high quality, high-density material typically found in expensive or historical roofing installations.
Installation Process:
- Prepare: Wipe down the edge of the roof and set the gutter system properly in place.
- Setting up the Apron: Position the gutter apron below the first row of shingles, with the bottom edge touching the back of the gutter.
- Secure: Using roofing nails or screws, anchor the apron to the roof deck until it is firmly attached and waterproofed.
- Overlap Sections: Installing multiple pieces should overlap each other by a few inches to ensure no water can seep through.
Benefits:
- Avoids Water Infiltration: Gutter aprons prevent water from entering the roof deck, fascia and soffit behind the gutters.
- Gutter Aprons Boost Roof Stability: By diverting water away from the weak points, gutter aprons support the life of the roof.
- Effective: The gutter apron is a low-cost, easy to install fix that will keep homeowners from paying for the expense of repairing water damage.
Common Issues:
- Bad Installation: Gutter aprons can fail to channel water in the proper way, resulting in leaks and damage.
- Material Degradation: Some materials like galvanized steel may rust or deteriorate over time, thus losing its effectiveness.
